Aftermarket Dolby Atmos is starting to look less like a one-off and more like a category. Industry watchers this week reported that a second head-unit maker is weighing its own aftermarket Atmos deck to follow Pioneer's SPHERA, which reached retail in April. Kenwood and Sony both declined to comment on future products, and Alpine said it isn't planning an Atmos deck — but the fact that the question is being asked at all is a shift from six months ago, when SPHERA stood alone.

The momentum isn't only in the aftermarket. Dolby says its Atmos in-car format now spans dozens of vehicle brands and well over a hundred factory-equipped models, and one automaker engineer recently compared the move to immersive audio to "the transition from mono to stereo" decades ago. For the aftermarket, that matters because it builds a library of Atmos-encoded content and a set of listener expectations that a plug-in receiver can then satisfy in an older car.

Pioneer's SPHERA remains the reference point: a 10.1-inch single-DIN receiver, priced around $1,300, that decodes Dolby Atmos inside wireless Apple CarPlay and can render a spatial mix over as few as four speakers using a car's existing front and rear positions. The piece that makes it work in a real vehicle is Pioneer's PURE Autotuning, which uses a microphone on the AUX input to measure the car and then sets time alignment, channel levels, and frequency response to place the listener at the acoustic center.

Why it matters for tuning: spatial audio in a car lives or dies on time alignment. The whole illusion of height and surround depends on sound from each speaker arriving at your ears in the right order, and a car is the worst-case room — you sit hard against one door with wildly different path lengths to each driver. An auto-calibration like PURE Autotuning gets you a sensible baseline, but it optimizes for one seat and one microphone position. If you tune by ear or by measurement afterward, resist the urge to flatten the frequency response and undo the delays the system set — on an Atmos setup those arrival-time settings are doing more for the soundstage than the EQ is. Measure to confirm the levels and timing look sane, then leave the spatial rendering alone.

Whether a second brand actually ships an Atmos receiver this year is still unconfirmed, and we'll update this story if one is announced. Either way, the direction of travel is clear: immersive formats are pushing into cars from both the factory and the aftermarket, and the tuning conversation is moving with them.
