A subwoofer's enclosure isn't just a box to hold the driver — its volume and (for ported designs) tuning frequency shape the output curve as much as the driver itself. The same driver in two different box designs can sound and measure noticeably differently.
Sealed enclosures are simpler, generally produce tighter and more accurate bass, and are more forgiving of box-volume errors — a good choice when sound quality (SQ) is the priority and some low-end extension can be traded for control.
Ported enclosures use a tuned port to reinforce output near the tuning frequency, gaining several dB of efficiency in that range — useful for SPL competition or simply getting more output per watt — but they require more precise volume and port-length calculations and are less forgiving of build errors.
Whichever type you choose, the driver's own Fs, Qts, and Xmax specifications should guide the box design — a calculator or design software using those numbers will get you much closer to a correctly tuned result than a generic universal box recommendation.
