The loudest a driver or system can play before distortion or mechanical limits take over — distinct from sensitivity, which measures efficiency.
Where sensitivity tells you how loud a speaker gets per watt, Max SPL tells you the ceiling — the loudest output the driver can sustain before THD spikes or excursion limits are exceeded. Two drivers can share the same sensitivity rating but have very different headroom above it.
Max SPL is especially relevant in SPL competition car audio, where systems are built specifically to push this number as high as possible, but it's just as relevant for home theater subwoofers expected to handle loud movie peaks without breaking up.
