A measure of how well an amplifier controls a speaker cone's motion, particularly the ability to stop it from moving once the signal stops.
Damping factor is the ratio of a speaker's nominal impedance to an amplifier's output impedance. A higher damping factor means the amp has tighter electrical control over the speaker cone, which can translate to tighter, more controlled bass.
In practice, damping factor matters most at very low values; once an amplifier's damping factor is reasonably high (above roughly 50 to 100), further increases have diminishing audible benefit. Long or thin speaker wire runs can also reduce effective damping factor at the speaker terminals, even if the amp's own rating is high.
